If youre an experienced fisherman, then you understand how important choosing the right fishing lure can be. My father used to always say, it takes an afternoon to learn how to fish, but it can take a lifetime to actually catch one. Fortunately, most people have a better success rate. But it can often prove challenging.
Choosing The Right Fishing Lure
My father always told me that choosing the right fishing lure was crucial to catching a lot of fish. In the end, its the only thing you have any control over. Weather conditions can change at any moment. And when it comes to live bait, fish can be just as picky as people. But the right fishing lure will always come through.
When choosing the right fishing lure, its important to find one that best resembles baitfish. After all, youre enticing the fish with the promise of food. One of the most effective means of doing this is to choose a lure that is silver or gold in color. Metallic, flashy finishes tend to catch the eye of the fish and trick it into thinking its prey.
Spoons also make great lures because they tend to wobble. The wobbling motion gives the lure the appearance of wounded baitfish. The wobbling motion is also tempting for fish with lateral senses such as salmon. They can feel the vibrations of the spoon, even if they cant see it. They think its a minnow thats been crippled and they cant wait to capture it.

Through all my years of fishing, the one tool Ive found most indispensable has been the Sutton Spoon. Growing up in a fishing family, someone was always coming home with a new lure or a new kind of bait. There was an ongoing competition to find the best way t o catch more fish. There was nothing we wouldnt try in our quest.
Discovering the Sutton Spoon
Thats why I was so pleased the Sutton Spoon was my discovery. Its no surprise that the Sutton Spoon is by far the most consistently effective lure Ive ever used. Theyve been around over a hundred years. And theyre versatile. Theyre great for trolling or casting, in both lakes and saltwater.
The Sutton Spoon comes in silver, brass, brass & silver, and hammered brass finishes. This makes them easily visible in any type of water and the metallic finishes closely resemble actual baitfish. They also come in heavier versions which are perfect for fast trolling and casting. The also make the 44 a smaller spoon which ways only 1/3 of an ounce. This is great for rainbow and brown trout.
Of course, my uncles didnt want to believe I had succeeded where so many had failed before me. But I was so thrilled with the Sutton Spoon, I quickly purchased one as a gift for everyone in my family. Before long, even they had to admit that nothing was of the quality and consistency of the Sutton Spoon.

In recent years, companies have been pouring a lot of resources into developing new fishing lures. If youre a seasoned fisherman like my grandfather, then you might think it cant be done. True enough, over the years there has been no one bait or lure that seems to work in every condition. However, the new fishing lures on the market today do share some common traits that make them highly effective.
Many companies such as Savant Spoon have spent a lot of time studying scientific articles about fish and their habits. And theyve also spent a good deal of time fishing. They studied what they knew worked next to what scientists have been able to learn. The result is a high quality, durable lure that is sure to attract more fish every time.
The Best of the New Fishing Lures
Over time, these companies have found that the one constant in fishing is hungry fish. Therefore, its important that the lure best mimic baitfish. This is why many of the new fishing lures on the market have silver or gold finishes. These are flashy and reflect the light which best catches the eye of fish. Plus their color looks a lot like prey such as bass or minnows.
Another important quality is the movement of the lures. Thats why my favorite new fishing lures are spoons. Spoons best simulate the wobbling motion of a wounded prey fish. This is attractive to a fish as it looks like an easy catch. Fish are like men, theyre motivated by their stomach. By carefully creating the illusion of food, you have the best chance of catching either.

The Silver Sutton Spoon is always a must have in my tackle box. Over the years Ive tried every type of fishing lure on the market. I even went through a crazy summer where I decided I was going to make my own, because I knew best what the fish wanted. I ended up with a lot of puncture wounds in my hand from trying to create the ultimate hook. And I didnt catch any more fish.
Silver Sutton Spoon: Expertly Made
Now I leave it to the experts. Sutton has been making fishing spoons for a hundred years now. The first thing I noticed was its consistency. No matter what the conditions, I seemed to always catch a good amount of fish with the Silver Sutton Spoon. This is due in large part to its silver finish. It most closely resembles the actual color of baitfish such as minnows and bass.
Plus, the spoon most closely mimics the movement of baitfish. It creates a wobble which fools them into thinking its a wounded fish. Wounded fish, of course, make excellent prey and no fish could resist that. And the spoons are well balanced which means they can maintain the movement without flattening out during trolling and retrieving.
In fact, one of the best qualities of the Silver Sutton Spoon is its versatility. It works well in fresh and saltwater and I know its excellent for both trolling and casting. And they come in a variety of weights and sizes, too. Heavier ones are excellent for fast trolling where the smaller 1/3 ounce version is perfect for rainbow and brown trout. Its exactly what Ill need on my next trip to Alberta.

Fishing derbies are an exciting competition for kids and adults of all ages. Every summer I run a fishing derby for the kids in our area. Its a wonderful experience for them. Fishing derbies are a great way for kids to develop confidence and self esteem. And activities are proven to keep kids out of trouble.
But fishing derbies are also fun for adults. Whether theyre for fun or for big money, fishing derbies are an excellent way to get to know other fishers in your area. Many fishing derbies in Alaska and Canada offer some big money prizes which can often reach up to fifty thousand dollars for one prize. Prizes are given out for the largest fish, the largest catch, the biggest aggregate catch, and combinations of all three.
Run Your Own Fishing Derbies
You dont need big money prizes to have a fishing derby. Most people just come out for the love of fishing. After holding one for the kids for years, the adults in our community started to get a little jealous. The kids were having so much fun and we were just dying to compete, too. So, a few years back we decided to start holding one for ourselves.
We named it after a fisherman in our community who had recently passed on. At the age of ninety five when he died, he had enjoyed nine decades of fishing in his life. We felt that this best summed up the spirit of fishing. It truly is a pastime for kids, for adults, and one that you can enjoy long into retirement.
